Here’s a startling statistic: developers spend only 16% of their working time actually writing code, according to IDC research. The remaining 84% is consumed by operational tasks like CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure management, security compliance, and monitoring.

A Microsoft Research study of 484 software developers revealed a significant disconnect between ideal and actual work allocation. Developers aspire to spend 20% of their time coding but manage only 11%. They want 15% on architecture and design but get merely 6%. The lost time goes to communication overhead, security and compliance tasks, and development environment configuration.

The correlation is direct and measurable: as the gap widens between developers’ ideal and actual workweeks, both productivity and job satisfaction decline. McKinsey’s research on developer velocity reinforces this finding from a business perspective. Top-performing companies allocate up to 70% of developer time to the “inner loop” (coding, building, unit testing) versus the “outer loop” (integration, deployment, operations).

The business implications are substantial. Companies in the top quarter for developer velocity achieve 4-5x faster revenue growth, 60% higher shareholder returns, and 20% higher operating margins.

The Infrastructure Tax

The IDC study identified where developer time disappears: security tasks alone jumped from 8% of developer time in 2023 to 13% in 2024. This increase reflects multiplying compliance requirements, proliferating security tools, and developers becoming stuck maintaining systems that should be self-managing.

When Microsoft researchers asked developers which tasks they most wanted to automate, coding wasn’t the answer. Developers prioritized documentation, environment setup, testing infrastructure, task tracking, and security compliance. One developer captured the sentiment succinctly: “More focus time and fewer meetings.”

When Platforms Become the Problem

Infrastructure platforms designed to solve these problems have sometimes become problems themselves. The VMware ecosystem illustrates this dynamic—following Broadcom’s acquisition, Gartner identified a potential “four-year, $300 to $3,000 per virtual machine migration” challenge, with enterprises reporting price increases of 600% or more.

Gartner estimates that 35% of VMware workloads will migrate to alternative platforms by 2028. However, this migration carries substantial costs, requiring ten full-time staff for initial scoping and six additional people for up to nine months of technical evaluation.

On another end of the spectrum, Heroku—which promised infrastructure simplicity—has faced escalating reliability issues. Following discontinuation of its free tier in 2022, the platform experienced a fifteen-hour outage in June 2025 that disabled thousands of applications. Developers seeking to avoid infrastructure complexity now find themselves managing that complexity while paying premium prices.

The pattern is consistent: platforms either become overly complex and expensive or too limited and unreliable. Neither approach creates space for developers to focus on building products.

What Infrastructure Should Actually Look Like

Infrastructure should be invisible to developers. Not “simpler to configure” or “easier to manage”—truly invisible.

Developers should write code and push to their repository while everything else happens automatically. The platform should understand that web applications require load balancers, databases need backups, and connections require encryption. Security should be the default state, not a configuration choice. Scaling should respond to actual demand without manual oversight.

Microsoft research validates this direction. Developers using AI tools daily to handle operational tasks achieve productivity scores of 83.7%, dramatically higher than those using such tools less frequently. Removing operational burden directly enhances developer output.

Building What We Should Have Built Years Ago

Traditional infrastructure vendors won’t solve this problem—their business models depend on complexity. AWS profits from service proliferation. Broadcom benefits from VMware’s complexity. Economic incentives point away from simplification.

Real change requires fundamentally different approaches. The answer lies in platforms where developer success and vendor success align, where invisibility—not indispensability—is the goal.
